As Missões Populares procuraram corresponder às necessidades de pregação especializada da Igreja Católica praticamente desde Trento até ao Vaticano II. Na sua estrutura tradicional, desenvolvem-se entre os oito e os quinze dias. Envolviam a deslocação de vários agentes missionários e o recrutamento no local de diversas equipas de leigos.
Durante os dias de pregação, precedidos por um período de minuciosa preparação do universo sociológico a atingir, o programa missionário ocupava o dia inteiro desde a eucaristia matinal, até ao grande sermão, passando pela visita dos doentes, as conferências especializadas e a catequese das crianças. Os missionários não dispensavam acções públicas de elevado impacto como as procissões, via-sacras e grandes concentrações. Após a Missão, os pregadores deixavam na paróquia vários elementos físicos e espirituais, que faziam perdurar na memória colectiva não só a
doutrina, mas também o ambiente vivido; e procuravam que os fiéis se inscrevessem em determinadas obras pias, que os comprometessem no futuro com uma sadia militância cristã.
The Popular Missions sought to meet the needs of specialized preaching in the Catholic Church from Trent to Vatican II. In its traditional structure, they lasted between eight and fifteen days. They involved the displacement of several missionary agents and recruitment on location of several teams of lay people. During the days of preaching, preceded by a period of careful preparation of the sociological universe to achieve, the missionary program occupied the whole day from the morning Eucharist, to the great sermon, through visiting the sick, the specialized conferences and the children´s catechesis. The missionaries valorized high -impact activities such as public processions, Stations of the Cross and large concentrations. After the Mission, the preachers left in the parish various physical and spiritual elements that made endure in the collective memory not only the doctrine but also the whole environment of the mission; they also sought that the faithful decided to enroll in certain pious works that would engage them in a healthy Christian militancy.
