Abstract(s)
In this article, the author seeks to analyse the corporative conception defended by the CatholicWorkers League from 1949 to 1974. This specialized movement of the Portuguese Catholic Action intervened next to the working “masses” in order to rechristianize the country. Through its press and trainings of ‘Centro Católico Operário’, it broadcasted its corporative ideal. It seated on three pillars: solidarity between social classes, right to free association and implementation of the principle of subsidiarity. By the light of the Social Doctrine of the Church, the ‘Catholic Workers League’ questioned the corporate model established by the ‘Estado Novo’ (New State), condemning him for his excessive interventionism, for the limitation of the private initiative and, therefore, of the trade union freedom. To restrict the activity of the ‘locista’ group, the Portuguese government adopted some measures, particularly the submission of its newspaper Voz do Trabalho to the censorship.
