After an analysis of the relationship between art and the church, based on the magisterial texts since Paul VI until Benedict XVI, including the Second Vatican Council, we ought to understand the evolution of this dialogue from a perspective of conciliar renewal. Afterwards, I present the texts in which Pope Francis expresses his vision of art, the way the church should relate to it and its place within the liturgy. Finally, and taking as starting point the writings and words of Francis, we identify some authors of the twentieth-century who have influenced his thought, allowing us to conceive a structure of key concepts present in all of his writings, and clarify his understanding of art in relation to the liturgy, to the church and to the world.
