Abstract(s)
Background: Burnout occurs when certain organizational, individual, and social conditions are met, which do not allow the individual to give an adequate response to the work stress they are subject to, and involves three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal fulfillment. Nurses working in ICUs are susceptible to burnout due to numerous factors ranging from having to complete a high number of tasks in a reduced amount of time, to workload pressures, conflicts and ethical decisions, to the feeling of inadequate care, the high number of cases of end-of-life patients, conflicts and ethical decisions and work shifts. Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review was conducted in order to answer the research question "How does burnout affect nurses in Intensive Care Units in the European Union?". The “EBSCO” and “PubMed” databases were used, filtering the articles published between 2017 and 2021, from which 14 articles that make up the sample were extracted. Results: Through the analysis of the articles, it was not possible to fully and universally understand how the incidence of burnout in nurses is expressed, due to the fact that it varies according to the country and region of the country in question. It was possible to understand and enumerate various personal and organizational factors that may be at the origin of burnout. Finally, regarding the prevention and treatment of this condition, mindfulness techniques and cognitive-behavioral techniques were pointed out, combined with the leadership style, the way in which existing human resources are managed and the social support that exists at work. Conclusion: It was possible to draw guidelines that lead to the understanding of burnout in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and, consequently, understand what are some of the best known practices that can prevent and mitigate this burnout condition.
