Este estudo analisa as estratégias adotadas pelos viveiristas agrícolas portugueses, com base no modelo dos 5 P’s de Mintzberg — plano, padrão, posição, perspetiva e manobra — e na distinção entre estratégias deliberadas e emergentes. Num setor agrícola tradicional, mas em transformação, procura-se compreender como estes empresários ajustam as suas decisões perante desafios como a escassez de mão de obra, alterações climáticas, volatilidade da procura, pressão regulatória e falta de apoios específicos. A investigação assenta numa abordagem qualitativa, com base em entrevistas semiestruturadas a seis viveiristas e à presidente da Associação de Viveiristas do Distrito de Coimbra. A análise evidencia a existência de pensamento estratégico, mesmo sem recurso a terminologia técnica. Empresas mais consolidadas revelam práticas mais deliberadas, enquanto estruturas recentes demonstram estratégias emergentes, com forte capacidade de adaptação. O modelo dos cinco P’s revelou-se útil para mapear dimensões como planeamento, fidelização, qualidade e colaboração. As estratégias observadas resultam, na maioria dos casos, de uma combinação entre intenção e resposta a fatores imprevistos. Este estudo contribui para a valorização de um setor pouco explorado na literatura de gestão, destacando a relevância da experiência prática na formulação estratégica.
This study analyzes the strategies adopted by Portuguese agricultural nurserymen, based on Mintzberg's 5 P's model - plan, pattern, position, perspective and maneuver - and the distinction between deliberate and emergent strategies. In a traditional but changing agricultural sector, the aim is to understand how these entrepreneurs adjust their decisions in the face of challenges such as labor shortages, climate change, volatile demand, regulatory pressure and a lack of specific support. The research is based on a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with six nurserymen and the president of the Coimbra District Nurserymen's Association. The analysis shows the existence of strategic thinking, even without the use of technical terminology. More established companies show more deliberate practices, while recent structures show emerging strategies, with a strong capacity for adaptation. The five P's model proved useful for mapping dimensions such as planning, loyalty, quality and collaboration. The strategies observed result, in most cases, from a combination of intention and response to unforeseen factors. This study contributes to the appreciation of a sector little explored in management literature, highlighting the relevance of practical experience in strategic formulation.
