The primary aim of this study was to investigate the main predictors of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Portugal, focusing on the psychological experience of pregnancy as a predictive factor. Through a quantitative methodology, a sample of 558 pregnant women answered an online questionnaire that, for this study, included the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), a new reduced version of the Pregnancy and Maternity Attitudes Scale (EAGM) and a sociodemographic and pregnancy-related questionnaire. Results indicated that, despite a significant decrease in alcohol consumption during pregnancy, 20.5% of the women continued to consume during the gestational period. This consumption tends to be associated with older women, lower educational levels, single or divorced status, unplanned pregnancy, and receiving exclusive care from Public Health Services. The findings demonstrate that pre-pregnancy consumption, lower education, and unplanned pregnancy are robust predictors of alcohol use. Regarding the psychological experience, the Body Image subscale of the EAGM emerged as the sole significant predictor, where higher scores were associated with a more negative perception of body image, consequently increasing the probability of consumption during pregnancy.
