O estudo das Misericórdias é essencial para a história da arte portuguesa da Idade Moderna. Com base na investigação efectuada no arquivo da Misericórdia de Esposende, uma vila na foz do rio Cávado fundada em 1572 e voltada para a actividade marítima, registaram-se, entre os finais do século XVI e os finais do século XVIII, os principais momentos de produção artística na igreja da confraria.
The study of “Misericórdias” is essential to the history of Portuguese Early Modern Art. Based on research undertaken in the archives of the Misericórdia of Esposende, a small town at the mouth of the river Cávado, established in 1572 and focused on maritime activity, we have registered the key moments of artistic production in the church of the brotherhood, between the late sixteenth and late eighteenth century.
