The main aim of the present study is to understand the relationship between coffee consumption and psychological well-being in a population of university students. The study included 174 higher education students who consumed coffee and who completed an online questionnaire composed of sociodemographic questions, items on coffee consumption and motives for coffee consumption, and psychological assessment instruments, such as the WHO-5, the PANAS-VRP, and the EADS-21. The results indicated that coffee consumption was mostly daily and associated with liking the taste, combating tiredness, alertness, routine, and focus while studying. Regarding the motives for coffee consumption, motives associated with habit/routine and focus/attention stood out, whereas motives related to emotional regulation presented lower mean values. No statistically significant associations were observed between the frequency or quantity of coffee consumed and the psychological indicators assessed, namely psychological well being, positive and negative affect, depression, and anxiety/stress. However, significant associations were found between anxiety/stress and the Focus/Attention and Emotional Regulation motives. The results suggest that coffee consumption among university students should be understood by considering not only the frequency and quantity consumed, but also the motives associated with consumption and the academic context. Thus, although the frequency and quantity of coffee consumed were not directly associated with psychological well-being, the underlying motives for consumption appear to be related to anxiety/stress indicators.
