Abstract(s)
The present study aims to analyze the perceptions of parents of children between the ages of three and six years, regarding their disciplinary practices, the support contexts they resort to and the perceived efficacy of this type of contexts. The sample has 104 participants who completed an online questionnaire, which is composed by the Portuguese version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and questions related to the support contexts. By analysing the results, it is possible to conclude that the positive disciplinary practices prevail in relation to the punitive ones, mainly in younger parents. It was also found that parental involvement is greater with daughters and more adopted by mothers. Difficulties and searching for support were perceived as moderate, by the majority of parents, and it was concluded that parents resort more to family members, perceived as moderately effective, and to educators, perceived as quite effective. The results seem to demonstrate the existence of the awareness of the implications that these practices have on child development. They highlight the need for awareness-raising campaigns for older parents, more information in education and informal networks for a more effective support for parents and improvement of health systems towards greater proximity to families.
