Abstract(s)
In this study, resulting from my professional experience, I intend to contribute to a
better understanding between the relationships of the institutionalized elderly persons
and his families, to realize that the emotional impact of the proximity or distance
between both interferes in the elderly person's life and well-being. It has two objectives:
the first will be to understand if there is a relationship between the
institutionalization of the elderly and the removal of the family, questioning the
frequency of visits to the elderly resident in ERPI by their family members within
a minimum period of six months after admission, through a quantitative study
recording the number of visits to the elderly,
The second objective will be to analyze the emotional impact of the bigger or
lesser frequency of visits by the family to the institutionalized elderly, questioning
the emotional impact of visits to the institutionalized elderly, through a qualitative
study by conducting interviews with the elderly after each visit.
This dissertation is divided in five chapters:
the first chapter is constituted by the theoretical framework, where two points are
addressed: the elderly person and the family, and the institutionalization of the
elderly in Portugal;
the second chapter is constituted by the motivation, questions and objectives of
the study;
