Abstract(s)
The present study aimed to characterize the emotional and behavioural problems of children who live in a prison facility with their mothers in Portugal. In order to fulfil the purpose of the investigation, questionnaires of the ASEBA battery were administrated to the children’s mothers, as well as to the preschool teacher of the participant children. A mixed method approach was used. The sample comprised 5 children with ages ranging from 20 to 34 months. The Child Behavior Checklist for Children 1 ½-5 (CBCL 1 ½-5) and the Caregiver-Teacher Report Form 1 ½- 5 (CTRF 1 ½-5) questionnaires were used in this study. The results show that all the children presented normative scores, which suggest a healthy and typical pattern of behaviour when it comes to emotional and behavioural problems. From a practical point of view, this exploratory study was conducted with the intention to contribute to decrease the absence of studies in this area in Portugal. Thus, these results will contribute to a deeper knowledge of emotional and behavioral problems among these children that are deprived from several normative experiences.
