Using data from the 2022 PISA assessment, this policy paper examines the gender gap in financial literacy among adolescents in Portugal. The mean raw gender gap in financial literacy is 10.7 points in favor of boys.  To better understand the determinants of the gender gap, we estimate a series of regression models that progressively account for demographic characteristics, socioeconomic background, parental financial involvement, academic skills, and school-level factors. The results indicate a persistent and statistically significant gender gap in financial literacy, even after controlling for these factors. Our findings suggest that unobserved factors such as financial confidence, attitudes toward financial decision-making, and gender norms may contribute to the gender gap in financial knowledge. From a policy perspective, the results highlight the importance of designing financial education initiatives that actively engage girls and strengthen their confidence in financial decision-making during adolescence. School-based programs, family engagement, and broader efforts to challenge gender stereotypes related to financial competence may also play an important role in reducing the gender gap in financial literacy.eng
