Juche, or Juche ideology, has been present in North Korea for more than seven decades, and since then, its presence has been guiding the country according to its own needs. This mechanism, managed by the government, proposes maximum control over society, influencing citizens' lives on social, political, economic, and cultural levels. Identified as the country’s main ideological structure, Juche was idealized and implemented by Kim Il Sung to revolutionize the situation in North Korea after their liberation from Japan in the Korean War. The present research seeks to understand if and how the Juche ideology influences (or not) the lives of North Koreans and their art, presenting a visual analysis of nine works by the artist, Sun Mu. The North Korean painter has been living in South Korea for over 20 years, and through his artistic practice, he uses art to question global political attitudes. Our research will be divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, we will introduce Juche, providing the historical, political, and social context that explains how this ideology became the main driving mechanism in North Korea. Moreover, we will explore how Juche influences the cultural life of society, particularly in artistic painting. The second chapter offers a brief introduction to North-South Korea (im)migration and how such transition can influence the psychological abilities of North Koreans. The third chapter aims to understand Sun Mu’s artistic vision and explore his expectations for the future. Finally, the last chapter consists of the visual analysis of nine of Sun Mu’s works from the period between 2011 and 2018 with the goal of understanding how the influence of Juche and propaganda are embedded in his artistic creations.
