Este texto constitui uma abordagem historiográfica e diacrónica a um movimento devocional desencadeado pela comunicação de uma revelação, em sonhos, por parte de um agricultor do Norte de Portugal aos seus vizinhos, no Verão de 1924. Nos seus primeiros anos, e antes que se consagrasse como um santuário e uma romaria anual legítimos, este movimento desencadeou um conjunto de acontecimentos dignos de registo e reflectores do contexto histórico daqueles últimos anos da I República. Entre outros aspectos, abordam-se: os conflitos entre a população local e as autoridades eclesiásticas em torno da legitimação e do controlo do santuário e da romaria; o envolvimento das autoridades eclesiásticas, civis e judiciais; a influência de outros casos de religiosidade popular; alguns fenómenos de sincretismo religioso; e a importância da imprensa como palco de publicitação e debate.
This paper is an historic and diachronic approach to a devotional movement started by the communication of a revelation, through dreams, by a farmer from the North of Portugal to his neighbours, in the summer of 1924. During its first years, and before its establishment as a legitimized sanctuary and an annual pilgrimage, this movement started a group of happenings that deserve being noticed, reflecting the historic context of those last years of the Portuguese first republic. Among other aspects, we approach: the conflicts between local population and ecclesiastic authorities over the legitimacy and the control of the sanctuary and the pilgrimage; the involvement of the ecclesiastic, civil and judicial authorities; the influence of different cases of popular religiosity; some cases of religious syncretism; and the importance of the press as a stage for publicity and debate.
