The present report addresses the development and acquisition of skills within the Master’s degree course in Nursing with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing: Nursing for the Person in Critical Condition, focusing on three main areas: the development of differentiated skills in various internship contexts, a reflective analysis of these experiences, and a deepening of knowledge on adherence to surgical checklists. In Chapter 1, focusing on the development of master’s level skills, a scoping review was conducted aiming to identify the main barriers and strategies for adherence to surgical checklists. The most common barriers found include resistance to change among healthcare professionals and the perception of workload. Among the strategies to overcome these barriers are continuous training, strong leadership, and the involvement of the entire surgical team in the implementation process. The review highlighted the importance of a multifaceted approach to ensure effective adherence to surgical checklists, promoting a culture of safety and reducing the risks of adverse events. Chapter 2 presents a reflective analysis on the acquisition and development of skills during internships in three different hospital contexts: home hospitalization, intermediate care unit, and patient safety office. In home hospitalization, the importance of effective communication and nurse autonomy was highlighted. In the intermediate care unit, the focus was on the ability to make quick and accurate decisions in highly complex situations. In the patient safety office, skills related to incident analysis and the implementation of preventive measures was enhanced. The reflective analysis allowed for the identification of critical skills developed in each context and how they contribute to professional nursing practice. The final conclusions of the work summarize the main findings of the previous chapters. The importance of surgical checklists as an essential tool for patient safety, as well as the need for effective strategies to ensure their adherence, was reaffirmed. Additionally, the experience in different internship contexts proved vital for the development of essential skills for safe and efficient clinical practice. The work concludes that the integration of formative and reflective approaches for healthcare professionals is fundamental to promoting a culture of safety and improving patient outcomes. This reflective work on the continuous development of skills acquired in different hospital contexts highlights the need for a holistic and integrated approach in training.
