The Chinese community of Manila – locally known as sangleys – is one of the most interesting and important issues concerning the evolution of the city as an emporium throughout the centuries, since the settlement of the Spaniards in the 1570’s. Being a problem that involves not only historical information but raises several questions about identity, social role and memory, and a current issue in present-day Philippines, we attempt to draw the course of the sangley community of Manila, in a vol d’oiseau view since the 16th Century to the present.
