Abstract(s)
This article seeks to consider some questions about the relationship between royalty and episcopacy during the reign of Alfonso IX and in the context of the Avignon Papacy. Although recent analysis focused on this period, the issue of the relationship between royalty and the Church in Portugal during the central decades of the Middle Ages remains an open area. This paper identifies some of the conflicts that marked the reign and attempts to characterize the causes of these conflicts, and around which kings and bishops fought each other.
