Abstract(s)
Introduction: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is defined as a non-progressive movement and posture disturbance due to brain injury occurring at an early stage of brain development. Providing health care to individuals with special needs requires adequate knowledge, skills and facilities to allow the care of these patients. Methods: This study is an observational cross-sectional epidemiological study using a convenience sample, including 29 individuals attending the outpatient clinic at the Associação de Paralisia Cerebral de Viseu (APCV). Individuals ages ranged from 19 to 55 years. An intra-oral clinical examination was performed to analyze the decayed index, missing and filled teeth (DMFT index) and the Silness & Loe plaque index. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical program IBM-SPSS Statistics (version 23.0). Results: Patient mean age was 33.14 ± 10.54. Six reside in the institution and 23 spend the night at home. In this study, it was observed that the mean value of DMFT was 7.79 ± 8.38, ranging from 0 to 32. Regarding plate index, the mean value was 7.65 ± 5.09, with values varying between 0 and 18. Regarding dentist visits, 8 patients had their first visit with less than 6 years old, while 9 visited with more than 6 years old. As difficulties for a medical-dental consultation, 25% state that consultations are expensive. 41.7% had difficulty finding a specialized dental practitioner, 45.8% said that they were denied dental treatment, 12.5% did not feel the need to visit the dentist, and 16.7% have travelling difficulties. Conclusion: The APCV shows a great concern in the general health of its users and is aware to make regular visits to the dentist, even when it is necessary to travel outside Viseu.
