Abstract(s)
positivo.
Parenthood is the process through which parents assume responsibility for their children’s wellbeing, becoming role models for the new generations. The process consists in the ability of parents to cooperate with their children throughout their development, and to answer their needs in a responsive way. The purpose of this study is to understand the benefits identified by the participants of a parental training program, which took place in a community context. A non-probability convenience sample was used, consisting of 80 parents and other caregivers, of which 75% were female, and whose age varied between 23 and 65. All caregivers had children attending the first four years of compulsory schooling, and attended a community center in Oporto. Results show that caregivers perceived the training as effective in the promotion of many parental, personal and social abilities of the participants, who showed a strong interest in the subjects discussed. Additionally, results show that the participants considered that the sharing experience within the group made a very important contribution to the enhancement of their parenthood, what also lends relevance to the training program, which means the program had a rather positive impact.
