Living on the edge: black metal and the refusal of modernity

| dc.description.abstract | In his in-depth study of extreme metal, Keith Kahn-Harris (2007) states black metal has sought to provide the most radically transgressive discourse within all music genres that compose the overall scene ever since its emergence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Misanthropy, elitism and individualism, verging on the radical antisocial, have all become a part of the black metal community identity with its sense of longing for an idyllic vision of the past and some return to ancient traditions accompanying an absolute refusal of modernity and a wish for liberation from all its constraints. With death and time representing privileged and central themes in black metal music, recent developments in its study have originated what is now deemed Black Metal Theory, a philosophical approach to the genre that has been pushing the boundaries for a deeper understanding and exploration of its relationships with alternative visions of nature and the universe, existence and experience, life and death, religion and theology. This essay will attempt to shed some light upon the darker side of black metal and the way it has explored and often contested the meanings of modernity. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | No seu estudo aprofundado sobre as formas mais extremas do heavy metal, Keith Kahn-Harris (2007) argumenta que, desde o seu aparecimento entre os finais dos anos de 1980 e o início dos anos de 1990, o black metal sempre se distinguiu por oferecer o discurso radical mais transgressivo de todos os subgéneros que integram a cena do metal extremo. Misantropia, elitismo e individualismo, no limite do comportamento antissocial, tornaram-se elementos centrais da identidade da comunidade do black metal, a par de um apelo nostálgico a uma visão idílica do passado e ao regresso a antigas tradições, que acompanham uma recusa absoluta da modernidade e um desejo de libertação de todos os seus constrangimentos. Com a morte e o tempo a ocuparem o lugar central nos temas privilegiados pelo black metal, desenvolvimentos mais recentes no seu estudo académico deram origem a uma «disciplina» designada «Teoria do Black Metal», uma abordagem filosófica ao género que tem vindo a forçar os limites da sua compreensão e a explorar a sua relação com uma visão alternativa da natureza e do universo, da existência e da experiência, da vida e da morte, da religião e da teologia. Este ensaio procura lançar alguma luz sobre o lado mais negro do black metal e das formas como este tem procurado explorar e contestar os significados da modernidade. | por |
