Abstract(s)
Introduction: In Portugal, demographic aging causes high economic and social constraints, essentially due to the increase in average life expectancy and the decrease in birth and death rates. As longevity is achieved, the challenge of extending healthy and quality years of life emerges. The strategy to guarantee social protection in Portugal is reflected in an increase of equipment and services, which include nursing homes that, generally, integrate their residents at stages of pronounced dependence and vulnerability, providing the majority of end-of-life care. Aims: The present study aims to identify the prevalence of people, with palliative needs, living in nursing homes; to identify witch palliative needs elderly people have in nursing homes and to identify witch Social, demographic and clinical characteristics can be associated with the palliative needs of residents. Methods: This is a quantitative, observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, whose sample consists of 350 residents of nursing homes from Misericórdias located in the district of Évora. Data collection will be carried out using patient and institution characterization forms, NECPAL, version 3.1, in the final phase of Portuguese validation and the IPOS (patient and healthcare professional questionnaire). Limitations: Being a cross-sectional study, the general characteristics of the elderly population, whenever patients are unable to respond IPOS will be applied by professionals, and the absence of previous semester data references to support the application of NECPAL. Perspectives: Based on known studies, it is expected that between 40 and 65% of nursing homes users, have palliative needs and some uncontrolled symptoms.
