A escrita que ora se apresenta integra uma Dissertação de Mestrado em Ciência Política e
Relações Internacionais, no Instituto de Estudos Políticos da Universidade Católica de Lisboa.
Pretende-se, com a mesma, analisar de que forma é que o Brexit - uma jogada política interna
que desencadeou um dos processos mais inesperados e desafiantes da política europeia desde
os finais da Segunda Grande Guerra – afetará o relacionamento bilateral do Reino Unido com
Portugal e vice-versa, nas suas mais diversas variantes: isto é, a nível diplomático, inclusive no
que toca à secular aliança entre os dois Estados que se encontrava adormecida; mas também a
nível social, económico e político.
Neste sentido, partiremos da bibliografia relativa à historiografia política da Aliança lusobritânica e à análise quer do seu impacto político-diplomático, quer da sua evolução. Usarei,
ainda, bibliografia que explique as razões e o processo político do Brexit, bem como sobre as
suas principais consequências. Privilegiam-se referências bibliográficas de índole académica,
artigos e obras científicas e históricas que se debrucem sobre o tema proposto, seja de
historiadores, seja de especialistas em política externa dos dois Estados. Todavia, no que ao
Brexit respeita, têm muita relevância os artigos, comunicados de imprensa e documentos que
se encontram nos sites das Embaixadas do Reino Unido em Portugal e Vice-Versa e, também, os
sites das instituições que compõem a União Europeia. De igual modo, utilizam-se fontes diretas
como discursos políticos, documentação oficial e ainda uma entrevista ao Doutor Bernardo Ivo
Cruz, a 15 de Março de 2022.
The centuries-old Anglo-Portuguese friendship, which counts with 650 years, was based on a common history between the two peoples, a relationship of friendship, cooperation, defence and trade. It has been crucial sometimes and worthy of criticism at others. The entry of Portugal and the United Kingdom into a series of organisations based on international law, such as the European Union, NATO, the UN, among others, has caused the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance to fall asleep, to lose effectiveness and applicability. After Brexit, will we see a rejuvenation of the Alliance? What can Portugal do to recover and develop the oldest Alliance in the world? Portugal and the United Kingdom, two countries with a strong Atlantic side can and should explore that legacy.
