Key aspects of intervention to support runaway youths : the experience of IAC

| dc.description.abstract | This report is the result of the integration of literature analysis and qualitative research analysis conducted during an internship at the Instituto Apoio Criança, in Lisbon. Documental analysis, direct observation, the construction of biograms and interviews were performed to investigate social work interventions with runaway youths. The target group in question is vulnerable youths and their families who have engaged in runaway behaviour, meaning they have permitted one or more nights outside of their homes without the consent from their parents, or they spend extensive time on the streets. The main objectives of the investigation are to identify the causes for runaway behaviour, paying particular attention to the role of the family, and to explore the suitable social work interventions aimed at this group. Specifically, to identify the positive aspects of intervention and the existing challenges, to highlight which methods can guarantee a greater success, and how intervention can be made more efficient. The report’s theoretical foundations are built on the ecological perspective as it considers the social environment of an individual and in turn, the challenges this implies for intervention. Results show that positive aspects include building trust and collaborative relationships with the youth, their families and other entities. To do so, values of listening, care, flexibility, tolerance, patience, empowerment and support must be encouraged. Furthermore, although risk factors are commonly found in the family context, they are present in multiple environments (individual, family, school, community, society), implying the need to conduct holistic needs assessments and establish a multidisciplinary intervention for a more guaranteed success. Lastly, considering the heterogeneity and uniqueness of runaways, intervention should be flexible and individualised. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Este relatório é o resultado da integração da análise da literatura e da análise da investigação qualitativa realizada durante um estágio de mestrado em Serviço Social no Instituto Apoio Criança, em Lisboa. Foram realizadas análises documentais, observação direta, a construção de biogramas e entrevistas para investigar intervenções de Serviço Social com jovens em fuga. O grupo-alvo em questão são os jovens vulneráveis e as suas famílias que se envolveram em comportamentos fugitivos, o que significa que permitiram uma ou mais noites fora das suas casas sem o consentimento dos pais, ou que passam muito tempo nas ruas. Os principais objetivos da investigação são identificar as causas do comportamento fugitivo, prestando particular atenção ao papel da família, e explorar as intervenções do Serviço Social adequadas dirigidas a este grupo. Especificamente, identificar os aspetos positivos da intervenção e os desafios existentes, para destacar quais os métodos que podem garantir um maior sucesso, e como a intervenção pode ser tornada mais eficiente. Os fundamentos teóricos do relatório são construídos na perspetiva ecológica, uma vez que considera o ambiente social de um indivíduo e, por sua vez, os desafios que isso implica para a intervenção. Os resultados mostram que os aspetos positivos incluem a construção de confiança e relações de colaboração com os jovens, as suas famílias e outras entidades. Para tal, os valores de escuta, cuidado, flexibilidade, tolerância, paciência, empoderamento e apoio devem ser encorajados. Além disso, embora os fatores de risco sejam normalmente encontrados no contexto familiar, estão presentes em múltiplos ambientes (individual, familiar, escola, comunidade, sociedade), implicando a necessidade de realizar avaliações holísticas das necessidades e estabelecer uma intervenção multidisciplinar para um sucesso mais garantido. Finalmente, considerando a heterogeneidade e a singularidade das fugas, a intervenção deve ser flexível e individualizada. | pt_PT |
