Introdução: A infeção cruzada ocorre quando microrganismos patogénicos são transmitidos entre pacientes e profissionais. Na prática dentária, o risco é elevado devido à exposição constante ao sangue, saliva e aerossóis que podem conter microrganismos. As linhas de água das unidades dentárias podem, portanto, ser uma fonte importante de contaminação, pois o ambiente interno dos tubos promove biofilmes microbianos. <br/>Objetivo: Identificar a contaminação microbiana em diferentes pontos de saída de uma das unidades dentárias na Clínica Dentária Universitária e verificar a eficácia dos protocolos de desinfeção dos aspiradores com base na comparação de amostras recolhidas antes e depois da desinfeção. O estudo avaliou a contaminação microbiológica em cinco pontos de uma unidade dentária. Amostras de biofilme foram recolhidas usando palitos e zaragatoas estéreis e colocadas em meios de cultura, para bactérias (Tryptic Soy Broth e Tryptic Soy Agar) e para fungos (Sabourad Broth <br/>e Sabourad Agar) e depois incubadas por 7 dias a temperatura ambiente. Após 7 dias, as colónias foram contadas e calculadas as médias dos 3 replicados. Resultados e discussão: Os resultados mostram que nas saídas de água não foi possível identificar a presença de microrganismos, pois mesmo ao fim de uma semana de crescimento não se observa crescimento de microrganismos. O mesmo não acontece no que se refere aos aspiradores de saliva e cirúrgicos em que foi possível identificar crescimento após 24 horas de incubação à temperatura ambiente. Estes <br/>resultados mostram que tanto quanto foi possível avaliar as saídas de água dos equipamentos dentários da Clínica Dentária Universitária da Universidade Católica Portuguesa não são foco de infeção cruzada. O crescimento bacteriano e de fungos ocorreu apenas nas amostras retiradas dos aspiradores. Conclusão: Estes resultados mostram que, tanto quanto foi possível avaliar, as saídas de água dos equipamentos dentários da Clínica Dentária Universitária da Universidade Católica Portuguesa não são foco de infeção cruzada.
Introduction: Cross-infection occurs when pathogenic microorganisms are transmitted between patients and healthcare professionals. In dental practice, the risk is particularly high due to constant exposure to blood, saliva, and aerosols that may contain microorganisms. Consequently, dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) can represent an important source of contamination, as the internal environment of the tubing promotes the development of microbial biofilms. Objective: To identify microbial contamination at different outlet points of a dental unit at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) and to assess the effectiveness of suction system disinfection protocols by comparing samples collected before and after <br/>disinfection. The study evaluated microbiological contamination at five locations within a dental unit. Biofilm samples were collected using sterile toothpicks and swabs and inoculated into culture media for bacteria (Tryptic Soy Broth and Tryptic Soy Agar) and fungi (Sabouraud Broth and Sabouraud Agar). The samples were then incubated at room temperature for seven days. After the incubation period, colonies were counted, and <br/>the mean values of the three replicates were calculated. Results and Discussion: The results showed that no microorganisms could be detected in water outlets, as no microbial growth was observed even after one week of incubation. In contrast, microbial growth was detected in both the saliva and surgical suction systems after 24 hours of incubation at room temperature. These findings suggest that, within the scope of this evaluation, the water outlets of the dental equipment at the Clínica Dentária Universitária do not constitute a source of cross infection. Bacterial and fungal growth was observed only in samples collected from the suction systems. Conclusion: The results indicate that, as far as could be assessed in this study, the water outlets of the dental equipment at the University Dental Clinic of the Portuguese Catholic University are not a source of cross-infection.
