With the advancement of media and the increasing presence of social networks, parasocial relationships, unilateral emotional bonds with media figures, have become increasingly common. Therefore, it is relevant to understand how these relationships articulate with attachment styles, affective patterns shaped by early relational experiences. This investigation, with a cross-sectional quantitative design, aims to explore the relationship between attachment styles and the establishment of parasocial relationships, considering the moderating role of fear of intimacy and the mediating effect of romantic breakup, using instruments validated for the Portuguese population. The results indicated a more complex association than initially predicted. While insecure attachment styles of the anxious type (disorganized and preoccupied) were associated with a greater propensity for parasocial relationships, the avoidant style was associated with significantly lower levels of parasocial involvement. However, it was confirmed that both fear of intimacy and the experience of a romantic breakup act as relevant psychological mechanisms. Fear of intimacy fully mediated the relationship between avoidant attachment and parasocial relationships, and romantic breakup acted as an antecedent influencing parasocial involvement, both directly and through increased fear of intimacy. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological dynamics underlying contemporary forms of mediated emotional connection and highlights the importance of considering relational factors in the analysis of affective behaviors in digital environments.
