Abstract(s)
As mulheres acabam
The body image and the obsession with beauty standards have been a recurring concern for centuries, from art to the mass media. Women end up becoming major consumers of this information. Recently, researches point to an increase in the diversity and representativeness of the image of women in the network society. This study aims to investigate the role of digital platforms in the construction and diversification of the female beauty standard and self-image, based on qualitative (semi-structured interview) and quantitative (questionnaire) research instruments. Five Brazilian digital influencers, were interviewed, they work with different platforms, producing female beauty and behavior content under different perspectives, from body acceptance movements to the defense of standard beauty. A questionnaire was also applied to 134 women who are part of Facebook groups that address the same subject. The conclusions suggest that women find in the social media a more flexible performance space than conventional media, which becomes a relevant environment in terms of the redefinition the beauty standard. The fact that social media has been occupied by women with different physical characteristics and tones of speeches makes them feel represented and, somehow, increases their visibility in the public space, questioning the existing social standards
