Cyber dating abuse is a contemporary form of violence in intimate relationships. The present quantitative study, conducted online, aimed to examine the association between exposure to cyber dating abuse (Cyber Dating Abuse Questionnaire – CibAN), perceived mental health (Mental Health Inventory-5), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), mental health literacy (Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire – Adult Version), and behaviours related to delaying or forgoing healthcare among Portuguese young adults. The sample comprised 92 participants (77.2% women), aged between 19 and 30 years. The prevalence of cyber dating abuse victimisation was 50% during the previous year and 62% across the lifetime. Cyber dating abuse perpetration was associated with poorer perceived mental health, lower mental health literacy, and poorer perceived quality of life. Additionally, 54.3% of participants reported having delayed seeking mental healthcare. Delaying mental healthcare was associated with poorer perceived mental health (MHI-5; M = 46.21, SD = 20.82 among those who delayed care vs. M = 58.67, SD = 15.07 among those who did not; p = .001). These findings may contribute to the development of strategies aimed at preventing cyber dating abuse and promoting timely help-seeking behaviours and access to mental healthcare.
