Abstract(s)
The purpose of this report is to document the final stage of the Master's Course in Nursing with Specialization in Community Nursing and Public Health with the objective of completing my Master's and becoming a Specialist Nurse in Community Nursing and Public Health. It seeks to prove the requisite specialized skills and knowledge aquired, through working in numerous, varied, and challenging contexts, and to outline the project's development and the experience gained throughout. The community intervention project “Empowering Teachers in the Prevention of Tobacco Use in Schools”, using the Planning in Health methodology in accordance with Imperatori and Giraldes (1993) and applying the theoretical referencing of community nursing as found in the Model of Evaluation and Community Empowerment (MAIEC) by Melo (2017) was developed in a Community Health Care Unit of the Regional Health Administration of Lisbon and Tagus Valley. Tobacco consumption is a serious public health problem that affects the entire population, both smoking and non-smoking. It is one of the main reasons for the increase in non-transmissible diseases. One of the objectives of the National Program for Health Education is to help promote quality health education in schools. The following health problem was identified: “Knowledge about tobacco prevention by committed teachers”. With the application of the MAIEC diagnostic questionnaire, a situational diagnosis was defined: community management has been compromised. The general goal was to contribute to the empowerment of teachers in the prevention of tobacco use in schools. Community interventions were carried out in the form of meetings with teachers and a health education session on the theme of “Prevention of tobacco use in Schools”. The operationalization of the project resulted in a gain in knowledge regarding the prevention of tobacco use in schools. The defined goals were achieved. The results that were obtained reveal the importance of this subject for the teaching community whose satisfaction with the session favours the follow-up of the project.
