The ‘Psychological First Aid for Heroes’ program aims to prevent bystander behavior and promote effective relief responses in crisis and emergency situations. The present study has as general objective to evaluate the effectiveness of this program regarding the promotion of empathy in primary children (Year 4). For this, we resorted to data collection through the application of the Empathy Assessment Scale (Veiga & Santos, 2011). The results of this study suggest that children in this age group have a higher level of affective empathy than cognitive empathy and that gender has no significant effect on empathy (cognitive and affective). Finally, regarding the effectiveness of the “Psychological First Aid for Heroes” program, it is possible to infer from this study that we have contributed to the promotion of heroic behavior, since the “Psychological First Aid for Heroes” program had a significant impact on cognitive empathy and the heroism literature indicates that cognitive empathy is at the heart of heroic behavior (Allison et al., 2016).
