This report is divided into two distinct parts. The first seeks to situate melodrama as a cinematic genre, addressing its main formal, thematic, and narrative characteristics. As a genre, melodrama dramatizes processes of social and individual emancipation in characters embedded in oppressive social, family, or affective contexts, marked by dynamics of repression, alienation, and confinement. To develop this reflection, two case studies will be used: All That Heaven Allows (1955), by Douglas Sirk, and The Match Factory Girl (1990), by Aki Kaurismäki. At the end of the first part, I will also establish a relationship between melodrama and Portuguese cinema through two films: O Sangue (1989), by Pedro Costa, and Os Verdes Anos (1963), by Paulo Rocha. In both works, the emancipatory dimension is associated with adolescence and the tensions inherent in the process of growing up in contexts marked by isolation and emotional instability, thus bringing them close to the central concerns of my project, Mocidade, Mocidade. In the second part of the report, I will describe the conception, development, and realization process of the project Mocidade, Mocidade, establishing a relationship between the theoretical issues addressed in the first part and the construction of the film itself. The short film explores how it engages with melodrama through the emancipatory process of a character set in a rural context in northern Portugal during the 1980s.
