This study aimed to analyse the perceived risks and benefits associated with the use of cannabis products in a sample of the Portuguese population. The research followed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional design, and an online questionnaire was used, composed of closed-ended questions and two open-ended ones. The final sample consisted of 444 adult participants of Portuguese nationality, residing both in Portugal and abroad. The results indicated that the cannabis flower containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was the most frequently consumed product, with smoking (usually mixed with tobacco) being the main route of administration. The most commonly reported motivations were relaxation, reduction of stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms, and increased pleasure and socialisation, the main concerns reported included the intensity and frequency of use, risk of dependence, cognitive alterations, anxiety and depressive symptomatology, as well as the quality and potency of the products. Participants also expressed critical perceptions regarding misinformation, social stigma, and the lack of institutional responses aimed at consumers. These findings highlight the importance of psychosocial interventions focused on harm reduction and the promotion of safer and more conscious patterns of cannabis use.
