Abstract(s)
The present dissertation addresses the conservation and treatment of selected set of textile pieces through research with practical application on the collection of the parish of Gião, Vila do Conde - Diocese of Porto. Textile pieces that, contrary to what is usually studied, are not under the shelter of museums, but under the care of the parish janitors. Therefore, this dissertation integrates all the technical procedure that allowed the knowledge of the collection under study through the completion of the inventory and the respective file sheets, the evaluation of the magnitude of the risks present in the various storage spaces through Stephan Michalsky's ABC method and the priorities for action identified and communicated to the community through in situ workshops. All the work developed with the community to improve the storage conditions in one of the spaces, selected with them, is also exposed, to raise their awareness and provide tools for them to safeguard their textile core. This action is complemented with the production of a guide (in the appendix) that addresses the cleaning of the storage spaces and closets, the handling and packaging of textiles, as well as the first care that they need. However, the greatest difficulty felt in this process had to do with the adhesion of volunteers, as there were few who volunteered. Finally, we present the different treatments carried out on 15 pieces of this textile set such as cleaning (mechanical, wet, and chemical), the consolidation of lacunae and tears, and the fixing of embroidery and braids, which followed the minimal intervention and reversibility as basic principles. Storage, creation of supports, and dyeing of threads for the treatment of the selected pieces are also contemplated. This dissertation aims to present the conservation work of a textile nucleus, the involvement of the local community in the basic principles of care elucidating that the interaction between professionals and the parishioners is possible.
