O sistema financeiro português viu-se confrontado pelos efeitos da crise económico-financeira que abalou o mundo em 2007. A par de todas as grandes potências mundiais, também a União Europeia adotou medidas de reforço dos mecanismos de regulação e supervisão. Dentro de cada país da União, o respetivo banco central assumiu um papel fulcral no desempenho das funções de supervisão e regulação dos sistemas nacionais. Com efeito, a evolução do sistema financeiro português passou pela ação do Banco de Portugal, em harmonia com a ação comunitária. O Banco de Portugal empenhou esforços no sentido de proteção de todos os agentes económicos. O sistema financeiro tornou-se mais sólido e consistente e os efeitos da crise começaram a ser gradualmente dissipados.
The Portuguese financial system was confronted by the effects of the economic and financial crisis that shook the world in 2007. Along with all of the great potencies worldwide, the European Union has also adopted measures to strengthen the regulatory and supervisory mechanisms. Within each EU country, the respective central bank has played a key role in the supervisory and regulatory functions of the national systems. In fact, the evolution of the Portuguese financial system was influenced by the action of the Bank of Portugal, in harmony with the European Union action. The Bank of Portugal committed efforts to protect all of the economic agents. The financial system became more solid and consistent and the effects of the crisis began to be gradually dissipated.
