Escalígero é um humanista italiano, que escreveu quase toda a sua obra em França; entre os seus tratados, encontram-se os Poetices libri septem, obra póstuma, editada em 1561. Dedicado a seu filho Sílvio, este tratado tem sobretudo objectivos pedagógicos e visa a formação de um jovem jurista, a quem não pode ser alheia a dimensão ética que nos encaminha para a beatitude ou acção perfeita, o que se alcança a partir do estudo dos princípios da filosofia. Para tal desiderato, muito concorre o conhecimento da história e a leitura dos poetas. É neste contexto que Escalígero vai tratar do tema das Amazonas no Capítulo XIV do Livro V, da sua Poética, elegendo passagens de Claudiano, Sílio, Estácio e Virgílio.

For this purpose, the knowledge of history helps a lot and the reading of the poets. In this context, Scaliger will approach the issue of the Amazons in Chapter XIV of Book V of his Poetics, choosing passages of Claudian, Silius, Statius and Virgil.
