The present study analysed how Portuguese athletics media coverage during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games represented male and female athletes, within a context marked by ongoing debates surrounding gender inequalities in sports media. The study adopted a document analysis approach, combining interpretative qualitative procedures with descriptive and inferential quantitative analysis. The corpus comprised 48 journalistic pieces published in Diário de Notícias, Público and Tribuna Expresso. Categories related to athletic performance, personal/emotional life, physical aspects, career outside sport, and the presence of external actors in the analysed news coverage were examined. The results revealed a relative quantitative convergence between genders, particularly regarding the centrality attributed to athletic performance and the overall length of the articles. Nevertheless, some differences were observed in the ways male and female athletes were portrayed, especially in news coverage concerning female athletes, where references to personal life and extra-sport dimensions appeared more frequently. The only statistically significant difference was identified in the presence of external sources, observed exclusively in articles classified as Masculine. From an exploratory perspective, the findings may suggest that contemporary inequalities in sports media coverage tend to manifest less through the quantitative exclusion of women and more through discursive mechanisms associated with narrative framing and processes of symbolic valorisation.
