Abstract(s)
This paper discusses the relationship between training and professional ethos of social
educators, based on an investigation still in early stages and framed by the PhD in Educational
Sciences, Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Portuguese Catholic University, deepening the
area of social pedagogy. The Social Education corresponds to an specific academic field in the
epistemological Social Pedagogy as a science of autonomous and specific education. We are in fact
facing an educational area with long tradition in European countries and already well recognized in our
country, mainly thanks to the affirmation of professional groups with distinctive profile such as social
educators. While in Portugal the first graduates in Social Education have gone to the labor market only
about a decade and a half (UPT, 2000), social educators already occupy a significant place in
Portuguese society, especially in the professional field traditionally identified with "social work."
However, and as warn the most representative associations of the sector, national and
international, the questions of identity and professional development still require further study and a
consistent framework at the level of properly structured training programs, and specifically for the
social educators. Thus, based on this finding and on the assumption that continuing education plays a
crucial role in the qualification of the practices and the affirmation of an autonomous professional
ethos, we are interested to understand what is the place that is assigned to training, by the Portuguese social educators, using for this purpose a qualitative study, fundamentally anchored in a
questioning strategy of the actors themselves.
