Este trabalho explora a interseção entre o conceito de cidades criativas e o reconhecimento de Capital Europeia da Cultura, com um foco particular na cidade de Aveiro. A investigação questiona como Aveiro e cidades similares empregam a criatividade e a cultura como pilares fundamentais não apenas para obter reconhecimento internacional, mas também promover o desenvolvimento urbano sustentável e inclusivo. O objetivo principal desta dissertação é esclarecer os conceitos de cidades criativas e de Capital Europeia da Cultura, identificar os fatores de sucesso neste contexto, analisar os critérios estabelecidos pela União Europeia para o reconhecimento destas cidades, examinar a estratégia cultural de Aveiro para o período de 2019 a 2030, e avaliar o processo de candidatura de Aveiro a Capital Europeia da Cultura, bem como e o seu reconhecimento como Capital Portuguesa da Cultura em 2024. A metodologia adotada nesta dissertação segue uma abordagem exploratória, combinando análises qualitativas e quantitativas. O estudo inicia-se com a delimitação do problema e uma revisão da literatura relevante, seguida pela análise de documentos oficiais relacionados às candidaturas de Aveiro e às estratégias culturais municipais para o período de 2019 a 2030. A interpretação dos dados coletados para responder à questão de investigação culmina na documentação e divulgação dos resultados obtidos. Como conclusão, destaca-se a importância das Cidades Criativas como impulsionadoras essenciais para o desenvolvimento urbano sustentável e inclusivo. Destaca-se o papel das estratégias culturais bem definidas e o envolvimento da comunidade como elementos cruciais para o sucesso das cidades em se afirmarem-se como centros culturais e criativos de excelência no cenário internacional.
This work explores the intersection between the concept of creative cities and the recognition of the European Capital of Culture, with a particular focus on the city of Aveiro. The research questions how Aveiro and similar cities use creativity and culture as fundamental pillars not just to gain international recognition but also to promote sustainable and inclusive urban development. The main objective of this dissertation is to clarify the concepts of creative cities and the European Capital of Culture, identify success factors in this context, analyze the criteria set by the European Union for recognizing these cities, examine Aveiro's cultural strategy for the period from 2019 to 2030, and assess Aveiro's application process for the European Capital of Culture, as well as its recognition as the Portuguese Capital of Culture in 2024. The methodology adopted in this dissertation follows an exploratory approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. The study begins with the problem definition and a review of relevant literature, followed by an analysis of official documents related to Aveiro's applications and municipal cultural strategies for the period from 2019 to 2030. The interpretation of the collected data to answer the research question culminates in the documentation and dissemination of the obtained results. In conclusion, it highlights the importance of Creative Cities as essential drivers for sustainable and inclusive urban development. The role of well-defined cultural strategies and community involvement are emphasized as crucial elements for the success of cities in asserting themselves as centers of cultural and creative excellence on the international stage.
