O artigo analisa a relação entre a institucionalização da Acção Católica Portuguesa, em 1933, e a teologia da Cristo-Rei. Remontando embora ao século XIX, esta adquiriu novo impulso e abertura no século XX, com o papado de Pio XI. A encíclica Quas Primas (1925) ao instituir a Festa de Cristo-Rei como festa maior da “nova cristandade” criou uma referência incontornável para o militantismo católico até, pelo menos, ao II Concílio do Vaticano (1962-1965).
This article analyses the connection between the institutionalization of the Portuguese Catholic Action, in 1933, and the theology of Christ the King. Though emerging from the 19th century, this theology benefited from a large impulse and spread in the 20th century, during Pius XI’s papacy. The encyclical Quas Primas (1925), through the establishment of the Feast of Christ the King as the major feast of the “new Christendom”, settled an essential reference for the catholic militantism that persisted till, at least, the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
