Abstract(s)
In order to provide specialized care, an expert nurse needs to acquire certain fundamental competencies. Only through the development of appropriate scientific, technical and human skills is the nurse able to improve, become differentiated, as a professional, and capable of responding to an increasingly challenging and demanding reality. This report, which intends to present the educational path I followed, was elaborated within the scope of the Master’s Degree in Nursing, with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing - Area of Critical Patient Nursing Care, at the Institute of Health Sciences of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. A scoping review was conducted, with the purpose of mapping the existing knowledge on the difficulties experienced by nurses, as well as the strategies that may facilitate their integration, with regard to the provision of care to the critically ill. This is an extremely current and pertinent topic, especially if one considers the increasing need to mobilize nurses between services and, often, to integrate nurses with little training in that field. Concerning this last issue, seeking to contribute to the quality of the provided care, I shared the study’s results within the various internship settings, achieving a synergism conducive to the development of competencies associated with specialized nursing care. This report also includes a critical and reflective analysis of the activities and competencies developed throughout those internships, describing the contexts and processes related to the development of relevant skills. The internships took place at a Burns Unit, a Trauma/Neurocritical Intensive Care Unit, and a Multipurpose General Emergency Service, which allowed for a wide range of experiences in different nursing areas. I regard this training period as a unique experience, and an essential step towards the development of the competencies required to provide specialized care to critically ill patients and their families. In the near future, I intend to deepen my knowledge and to develop additional skills, with the same passion, interest and dedication.
