Abstract(s)
A correspondência (1643-1649) entre a princesa Isabel da Boémia e René Descartes, só integralmente conhecida em finais do século XIX, é reveladora de preocupações comuns e de afeição mútua. O presente artigo visa recuperar o lugar de Isabel na evolução da filosofia em geral, e da antropologia cartesiana em particular. Aplica-se a hermenêutica a uma conversação que não teria cabimento numa obra formal, de modo a entender como temas do quotidiano se tornaram objeto de reflexão e, inversamente, essa reflexão veio lançar luz sobre esses mesmos temas. Na sequência de estudos de Henriques (1996) e dos contributos marcantes de Shapiro (1999) e Jeffery (2018) sugere-se como a teoria das emoções de Isabel proporcionou a Descartes a evolução do tratamento da dualidade de corpo e alma no Tratado sobre as paixões da alma (1649), já fora do escopo deste artigo.
The correspondence (1643-1649) between Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia and Rene Descartes, only fully known at the end of the 19th century, reveals common concerns and mutual affection. The purpose of this article is to recover the place of Elizabeth in the evolution of Cartesian anthropology. The applied methodology is hermeneutics of a conversation that would not fit in a formal work, but that allows us to understand how everyday issues became subject of inquiry and, conversely, this inquiry enlightens those issues. Following previous studies by Henriques (1996) and the remarkable contributions of Shapiro (2007) and Jeffery (2018) it is stated how princess Elizabeth elaborated a theory of emotions, and how she suggested the evolution of the Cartesian theory of substantial duality in the Treatise on the Passions of the Soul (1649) outside the scope of this article.
