Abstract(s)
This study aimed to identify the psychosocial hazards to which victim support professionals are exposed to and to understand the coping strategies that professionals put in place to deal with the stress of their work. To this end, a qualitative methodology was adopted in order to explore the professionals' perceptions regarding their work. Data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with the support of a script produced a priori. The sample consists of a total of 10 participants with different academic backgrounds, belonging to six portuguese Private Social Solidariy Institutions (IPSS). The results indicate that these professionals are exposed to psychosocial hazards related to the precariousness of their employment contracts and remuneration, the high emotional demands of their work, the unpredictable tasks, the personal work-life conflict and the high workload. On the other hand, to deal with stressful situations in their work, professionals adopt strategies that allow cognitive distance from the adverse situation and seek social support within and outside of the institution. Some practical implications of the results obtained are presented, as well as the limitations of the present study and suggestions for future investigations.
