Abstract(s)
Arouca’s monastery was one of the richest monasteries of the order of Cister in Portugal, but its prosperity days ended in the 19th century, due to the impact of the deep changes in the portuguese society and of the political measures that have determined the extinction of the religious orders. We study this process from 1786, the date for which we have the first sources, to 1886, when the last monk has died. However, several centuries of existence of the Cister community, had a very strong influence in the town and the population that continued to benefit of its cultural and religious legacy. This reconfiguration was tutored and dynamized by the Real Irmandade da Rainha Santa Mafalda, whose foundation and installation process we analyze from 1886 to 1915, the date for which the adjustment of the brotherhood to the demands resulting from the First Republic was concluded.
