Abstract(s)
From 1721, king John V of Portugal tried to modernize the Portuguese coinage. The main objective was to use the coins as a new sophisticated tool for international affirmation. The reforms, expressed mainly in the golden coinage, launched a tradition of stylistic and artistic quality, both in the portrait and in the representation of the national shield of arms, which was developed throughout all subsequent reigns in Portugal.
