Who watches sport, and what does personality reveal about how fandom is expressed? Using Facebook status updates and self-reported Big Five scores of 6246 users across 17 sports, we show that personality leaves a small but consistent imprint on the expression of sport fandom while barely predicting which sport a person watches. Personality maps onto sport attributes more than sport identities: less agreeable users favored high-contact, high-risk sports and extraverts favored larger-team sports. The breadth of a person's viewing was associated with Extraversion rather than Openness, contrary to the cultural omnivore hypothesis. Fans' own words, scored for sentiment and for motives with a validated language-model classifier, show that personality predicts the intensity and motives of expressed fandom (drama, escape, social connection). These associations hold when posting volume and inferred age and gender are controlled, and we found no reliable evidence that inferred gender moderates them. Personality shapes the expression of engagement more than taste in sports.
