Abstract(s)
This thesis covers the theme of external professional supervision in Social Work as a place of personal and professional development that promotes the (re)construction the intervention of social workers in home care services. It aims to analyse the case of a supervision process developed with social workers that coordinate these services, in a social institution in Lisbon, under a protocol with a university. On the theoretical and conceptual level, we have used contributions of diverse disciplines and theoretical frameworks, aiming to favour the interaction of the perspectives at hand. From the theoretical point of view each perspective was deeply developed, being put in a feedback relationship with the collected empirical data. However, we tried not to impose to the empirical field our theoretical references, trying to give emphasis to the referential of the empirical subjects. In terms of followed methodology, we place ourselves in a qualitative and comprehensive paradigm, having the analysis focused on the professionals’ practices and their reports on the supervision process. We opted for an analytical stance while deconstructing the meanings used by professionals and the reconstruction of experiences, obtaining in this way a knowledge based on the understanding and practices of the professionals. These characteristics make the theme analytically relevant in terms of understanding the diversity of strategies that foster reflection and creation of professional knowledge that promote continuous training as well as a continuous personal and professional development. The study was therefore based on thirty-three semi-structured interviews carried out with the social workers that coordinate the home care services of the aforementioned institution. The collected data was then organized and systematized using qualitative and categorical content analysis with the support of MAXQDA software. The results revealed that the systematic critical analysis of the daily practices of social workers, enabled by supervision, allows for personal and professional development, as well as analyses the fundamentals and processes of intervention, supporting possibilities for new practices. These practices are fed by systematized knowledge through the process of reflexivity, representing the overcoming of previous knowledge, building knowledge that open new paths for the social worker as a professional. At this level was possible to identify three profiles of supervisees: the technical-bureaucratic, the practical-immediatist and the reflexive, which indicate different levels of reflexivity. We have concluded the relevance of external professional supervision as a locus of (re)construction of the intervention of social workers in home care services, which allows to increase knowledge and promote a critical, reflexive and more qualified practice.
