The present dissertation aimed to understand the impact of sports practice on the lives of young people in residential care, analysing their experiences, perceptions and the meanings they attribute to it. Drawing on the literature that links sports practice to emotional well-being, to the development of personal and social skills, and to the building of relationships of belonging in contexts of vulnerability, the study analysed the narratives of young people residing in three residential care homes in the north of Portugal. Methodologically, a qualitative approach was adopted. Twenty-three young people took part, aged between 12 and 23 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and subjected to content analysis (Bardin, 2011). The results consistently showed that sports practice is perceived as a context of security and emotional regulation, of development of personal and social skills, of strengthened self-esteem, and of building relationships of belonging that frequently extend beyond the sporting context. Although these benefits were not perceived with the same intensity by all participants, sport emerged as a globally significant experience. Finally, the study's implications are discussed and recommendations are presented for valuing sport within the context of residential care.
