Objective: Anticipatory grief is an emerging phenomenon among Portuguese family carers that remains largely unexplored, especially in relation to overload, attachment and meaning of life. This study aimed to explore these associations. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive-analytical study was developed with a convenience sample of 60 Portuguese family caregivers. The participants were mostly female (83.3%), aged between 23 and 72 years (M= 51.07; SD= 9.20). The instruments used were the Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Bereavement Inventory–Short Form, the Zarit Scale, the Experiences in Close Relationships–Relationship Structures Questionnaire, and the Meaning of Life Questionnaire. Results: A significant, positive, and moderate relationship was found between Anticipatory Grief and Burden (rs = .83, p < .01). A significant relationship was also found with Attachment, in particularl a negative and low relationship between Avoidance and Concern and Feeling of Isolation (rs = -.26, p = .04). Regarding Meaning of Life, a significant negative and low relationship was found between Anticipatory Grief and Presence (rs = -.33, p = .01), as well as a significant positive and moderate relationship with Search (rs = .46, p = .001). Conclusions: The results highlight the need for psychological interventions that promote adaptation to the process of anticipatory grief through recognition and processing of loss.
