Complicated grief may occur after the loss of a loved one, resulting in a prolonged grieving process and significant difficulties in coping with the loss. The use of mindfulness, a practice involving full and intentional awareness of the present moment, without judgment, has been associated with positive effects on mental health and overall well-being, and may be a key factor in coping with loss. In this study, grief experiences, psychological flexibility, grief acceptance, and mindfulness (trait/practice) were analyzed among bereaved individuals, examining the relationship between psychological inflexibility and experiential avoidance, mindfulness (trait/practice), and grief experience. The sample consisted of 279 Portuguese adults over 18 years old who had been grieving for at least six months. Data collection was conducted online, using the Inventory of Complicated Grief, the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale. The results of this study indicate statistically significant differences in symptoms of complicated grief according to the closeness to the deceased and the time elapsed since the loss, but no differences were found regarding mindfulness practice. Correlation analyses showed that higher levels of psychological inflexibility and experiential avoidance were associated with greater intensity of complicated grief symptoms, whereas higher levels of trait mindfulness were related to lower levels of psychological inflexibility and experiential avoidance.
