Understanding inflation during and after covid : the Portuguese case

| dc.description.abstract | This work investigates the drivers of inflation in Portugal between January 2004 and March 2024, focusing on the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on the work of L. M. Ball et al. (2022), and using both multiple linear regression and non-linear regression models, the study highlights the significant roles of unemployment and headline shocks in influencing the surge and duration of core inflation. The findings reveal that inflation during the pandemic was primarily driven by increased labor market tightness and supply chain disruptions, exacerbated by geopolitical events such as the war in Ukraine and the Gaza strip. Furthermore, there was a slight unanchoring of inflation expectations as economic agents adjusted to rising prices. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Este trabalho investiga os principais fatores responsáveis pela evolução da inflação em Portugal entre janeiro de 2004 e março de 2024, com especial foco no período da pandemia do COVID-19. Inspirado no estudo de L. M. Ball et al. (2022), e utilizando modelos de regressão linear múltipla e não linear, o estudo destaca os papéis significativos que o desemprego e os headline shocks tiveram ao influenciar a core inflation. Os resultados revelam que a inflação durante a pandemia foi principalmente impulsionada pelo aumento da rigidez no mercado de trabalho e pelas perturbações nas cadeias de abastecimento, agravadas por eventos geopolíticos como a guerra na Ucrânia e na faixa de Gaza. Além disso, houve uma ligeira desancoragem das expectativas de inflação à medida que os agentes económicos se ajustaram ao aumento dos preços. | pt_PT |
