Abstract(s)
The purpose of endodontic treatment is to resolve or prevent apical periodontitis, a disease caused by root canal infection. The treatment involves biomechanical preparation of the root canals, with the use of instruments and chemicals, to improve debridement and disinfection. Although this approach is effective in many cases, failures still occur, and are caused mainly by microorganisms, which remain within the root canal system. In this sense, the theme of lasers was used for use in endodontic disinfection. This work aimed to evaluate the disinfection capacity of the root canals, using different techniques with lasers. A search was performed in the computerized bibliographic databases Pubmed and Web of Science (WoS) that specify articles on the use of laser in endodontic disinfection and verify its effectiveness. 64 articles were selected that meet the recommended selection criteria. The results of the selected investigations reported that the use of the various laser techniques (photodynamic therapy, PIPS, direct irradiation with the dry root canal and the wet root canal) can reduce the number of microorganisms. Some studies also carried out a comparison with a group in which only NaOCl was used, and most of them concluded that the effect of the laser techniques is equal to or worse than that of NaOCl.
